The Aquanaut is the sports-rubber-strap line of Patek Philippe, introduced in 1997. It was positioned as a more contemporary, accessible companion to the Nautilus — similar rounded-octagonal case, its own identity: composite Tropical strap (rubber with textile content), embossed grid dial, smaller size, lower price.

Design
The Aquanaut keeps the Nautilus's rounded-octagonal case shape but loses the lateral hinges — the strap attachment is integrated directly into the case. The dial carries the embossed Tropical grid pattern that catches light differently from the Nautilus's horizontal ribs.
Market history
The 5167A (40 mm steel, three-handed, 2007–2022) was for years the accessible entry into the Nautilus/Aquanaut universe. With its 2022 discontinuation, secondary-market premiums jumped to multiples of MSRP. The successor 5267A is priced higher and difficult to acquire at authorised dealers.
The 5164A Travel Time and 5968A Chronograph are the most traded current Aquanaut references and trade at meaningful premiums at retail.
Aquanaut versus Nautilus
The Aquanaut is sportier, more contemporary — rubber strap, a different dial grammar. The Nautilus is the heritage piece with integrated steel bracelet and ribbed dial. Patek positions the two as complementary rather than competing.
At our atelier in Munich we authenticate every incoming Aquanaut — dial, strap attachment, movement serial — before it enters stock.
Frequently asked
- In the mid-1990s Patek Philippe set out to address a younger clientele with a sports watch that felt sportier and more contemporary in materials than the then fifteen-year-old Nautilus. The result was a separate line on Tropical rubber strap, priced markedly below the Nautilus and offered in a smaller size. The two lines today cover two clearly separate segments of Patek's sports universe.
