Check Rolex serial number and determine production year

Your Rolex serial number is the key to your watch's history. With our free tool you can check the serial of your Rolex and determine the exact production year. The system covers every Rolex model from 1926 to 2025, including Submariner, Datejust, GMT-Master and Daytona.

Checking the Rolex serial number is important for authentication and valuation. Every authentic Rolex carries a unique serial engraved between the lugs (older models) or inside the rehaut (newer models from 2005 onwards).

Where do I find the Rolex serial number?

Engraving position by production era.

The Rolex serial sits between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o'clock position, behind the bracelet. This 4- to 8-character number is machine-engraved by Rolex onto every watch and lets you determine the year of production.

Important change from 2005: From 2005 Rolex additionally began engraving the serial onto the inner case rim (the so-called "rehaut") between dial and crystal. From 2008 the serial is engraved exclusively in the rehaut.

  1. Before 2005Serial only between the lugs at 6 o'clock (bracelet must be removed).
  2. 2005–2008Serial engraved both between the lugs and in the rehaut.
  3. From 2008Serial visible only in the rehaut (readable without removing the bracelet).

The history of Rolex serial numbers

Four systems, a century of manufacture history.

Numeric system (1926–1987)

From its founding to 1987 Rolex used an ascending numeric system. Serials started at around 28,000 in 1926 and rose continuously past 9 million by 1987. From this sequence the production year can be determined relatively accurately.

ExampleSerial 7,500,000 corresponds to the year 1982

Prefix-numeric system (1987–2000)

From 1987 Rolex introduced letter prefixes. Serials now consisted of a letter followed by digits (e.g. R598200, U932150). Specific letters were assigned to specific years, with the trailing number providing further differentiation.

Example"R" was used 1987-1988, "U" for 1997-1998

Prefix system (2001–2010)

From 2001 to 2010 Rolex simplified the system: a single letter at the start unambiguously determined the production year. "K" was 2001, "Y" 2002, "F" 2003-2005, and so on. This system was the easiest for collectors to decode.

Example"V123456" = production year 2009

Random system (from 2011)

From 2011 Rolex switched to a fully random alphanumeric system. The serials no longer follow any recognisable pattern, making year identification impossible without official Rolex documentation. The system prevents counterfeits and back-dating.

Example"Z9A1B2C3" = 2011-2025 (exact year not determinable)

Why serial numbers matter for value

Four reasons to know the serial number of your Rolex.

Authentication

The serial number is a decisive feature for verifying the authenticity of a Rolex. Counterfeits often have wrong, duplicate or model-mismatched serials.

Valuation

The production year significantly influences market value. Certain years are more sought-after than others (e.g. the final production years of discontinued models). Vintage watches from particular eras command premium prices.

Service history

Rolex and authorised service centres document all maintenance against the serial number. This matters for warranty claims and the maintenance history of the watch.

Model identification

Combined with the reference number, the serial helps identify the exact model, production variants and special editions.

Find the Rolex serial number

On Rolex watches up to 2005 the serial sits between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position. The bracelet must be removed to read it. From 2005 Rolex additionally engraved the serial inside the rehaut (inner case rim) at 6 o'clock. On models from 2010 onwards the serial is found exclusively in the rehaut.

Rolex Submariner serial number

126610LN · 124060 · 116610LN · 16610

The Submariner serial sits between the lugs at 6 o'clock; from 2008 additionally on the rehaut. Vintage Submariners like the "Red Sub" (1680) or "Hulk" (116610LV) are especially sought-after — production year and original condition decide value significantly.

Rolex Daytona serial number

126500LN · 116500LN · 116520 · 6263

The Daytona carries its serial in the usual place between the lugs. Vintage "Paul Newman" references (6239, 6241, 6263, 6265) are arguably the most sought-after collector pieces of the brand — exact dating via the serial is value-decisive here.

126710BLNR · 126710BLRO · 126720VTNR · 16710

The GMT-Master II nicknames Pepsi (BLRO), Batman (BLNR), Sprite (VTNR) and Coke refer to the bezel, not the serial. For dating, the usual Rolex schema applies — letter prefix until 2010, random series from 2011.

Rolex Datejust serial number

126234 · 126200 · 116234 · 16234

Counterfeit warning signs

Four red flags you can spot on a Rolex's serial number and engraving.
Counterfeit warning signs

Engraving too shallow

Genuine Rolex serial numbers are cut deep, sharp and with perfect line work into the metal. Counterfeits often show shallow, etched or mechanically "applied" engraving — particularly visible under a 10× loupe.

Wrong typography

Line weight, character spacing and letter shape have been constant at Rolex for decades. Uneven heights, deviating serifs or "soft" letter edges are clear warning signs of manipulated or fake engraving.

Inconsistency with the model

A serial with prefix "M" fits 2007/2008. If the reference points to a 2020s caliber, or the dial shows a later design variant, that is a strong indication of manipulation, a "frankenwatch" or counterfeit.

Duplicate or known false numbers

Every Rolex serial number is unique worldwide. If two watches with the same serial show up, at least one is a counterfeit. Reputable dealer databases document known "repeaters" and flagged numbers.
