Tank, Santos, Panthère and Ballon Bleu - the iconic Cartier models
Cartier watches are more than just timepieces - they are wearable works of art and pieces of jewellery. The Parisian Maison comes from the jewellery tradition, not from the classic art of watchmaking; this characterises every model. Where other manufacturers celebrate technical complications, Cartier celebrates form, line and the material itself. At Time Boutique Munich, we stock pre-owned Cartier watches from Tank and Santos to Panthère and Ballon Bleu - atelier-tested, with a certificate of authenticity and a 12-month guarantee.
Cartier Tank: The absolute icon since 1917, inspired by French Renault tanks of the First World War. The rectangular case with vertical brancards revolutionised watch design - until then, round was the only acceptable format. Available in countless variations: Tank Louis Cartier (vintage elegance), Tank Française (daily wearer in steel or bicolour), Tank Américaine (stretched version), Tank Solo (entry-level) and Tank Must (re-edition quartz classic). The Tank is timeless and iconographic - worn by Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol, Princess Diana and Michelle Obama.
Cartier Santos: The world's first wristwatch (1904), designed for aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who was looking for a watch that he could read while flying without taking his hand off the wheel. Square case, visible screws on the bezel as a design signature, integrated steel bracelet (today changeable without tools using the QuickSwitch system). Variants: Santos de Cartier (modern daily in 35 / 39 / 41 mm), Santos-Dumont (flat dress classic with manual winding), Santos 100 (40 mm generation 2004-2017, now a collector's favourite). A classic for men and women alike.
Cartier Panthère: The symbol of the 1980s - feminine, sleek, a piece of jewellery in a watch guise. With a small square case and integrated five-link metal bracelet ("maillon") that flows like jewellery on the wrist. Particularly popular in gold (yellow or rose gold) or bicolour. Discontinued in the late 1990s, returned as a re-edition in 2017 - and currently very trendy again. Vintage panthères in their original condition are increasingly fetching premium prices on the market.
Cartier Ballon Bleu: The modern interpretation of the Cartier aesthetic, introduced in 2007. Round, slightly domed case, characteristic blue sapphire cabochon crown integrated directly into the case. Elegant and contemporary - perfect for any occasion, in sizes from 28 mm (ladies) to 46 mm (men), in steel, gold and bicolour.
At Time Boutique, you receive Cartier watches with complete documentation (if available), a certificate of authenticity and a 12-month warranty. For models with original box and Cartier papers, the value retention is significantly higher - we label the scope of delivery transparently in every description.
Authenticate Cartier watches correctly
Cartier fakes are widespread on the market, especially in Tank and Panthère models - the square case shapes are technically easier to reproduce than complex Rolex profiles. Genuine Cartier watches can be recognised by the precise workmanship of the case (clean edges, perfect lines), the sharpness of the "Cartier" engraving on the dial, the quality of the cabochon stone on the crown (genuine sapphire, clear cut surfaces) and the accuracy of the Roman numerals (evenly spaced, correct proportions).
At Time Boutique, we put every Cartier watch through its paces in the atelier: Movement authenticity (Cartier uses ETA or Piaget movements for many quartz models; its own Manufacture family for mechanical complications), case reference number and serial number against Cartier databases, dial details under a 10× magnifying glass and bracelet quality. For the modern Manufacture calibres (Cartier 1904 MC, 9750 MC), we also check the movement decoration and Côtes de Genève cut. Your purchase is absolutely secure - with a certificate of authenticity and a 12-month guarantee.
Value retention and care of Cartier watches
Cartier watches retain their value particularly well if they are serviced regularly and worn with respect. We recommend a full service every 5-7 years - particularly important for mechanical movements such as the hand-wound Tank Louis Cartier or the automatic Santos. For quartz models, a battery change with a seal check every 2-3 years is often sufficient.
Polishing should be carried out sparingly in order to preserve the original shape of the case - the sharp brancard edges of tank models in particular are part of the identity and reduce the value if polished too aggressively. We only polish on express request and after a maintenance check.
Special feature of Cartier: Many models (Tank Louis Cartier, Santos-Dumont, Vintage Tank) have leather straps that wear out over time. Original Cartier bracelets with a folding clasp and Maltese Cross signature cost between €300-800 and are essential for maintaining the value of a vintage or premium Cartier. At Time Boutique, you will receive advice on original replacement bracelets, professional service in our workshop in the Munich atelier and a 12-month warranty on every service carried out.
